How To Remotely Shut Down PC?
Microsoft Windows has a utility program to shut down a network computer known as shutdown.exe remotely. First We have to configure the remote computer that we want to shut down. To configure a remote computer, we must have administrator rights on the remote computer.
Follow the steps below to configure a remote computer.
Step 1:- Enable the remote registry service on each computer that we want to shut down remotely. It is disabled by default.
Step 2:- To enable it click on the start menu and search for services. msc.
Step 3:- Look for the Remote Registry service. Right-click on it and select its properties.
Step 4:- Now we have to set the startup type to automatic in the properties Windows and click on the start button to start the service.
Step 5:- Now we have to enable the Windows instruction Management port from the firewall to allow remote operation.
Step 6:- By pressing the Window key open the start menu and type firewall.
Step 7:- Type allows a program in the search bar and hit enter.
Step 8:- Now, a Window will appear. Press the change setting button.
Step 9:- A list will open and locate the Windows Management Instruction and enable it.
Remotely Shutdown PC
- To shut down a computer from another computer first open the command prompt by typing cmd in the run command or click on the start button and type Command prompt in the search bar.
- In the command prompt type the following command and hit enter for Graphical User interface.

3. Now Dialog Box will appear and we can type the name and IP address of the computer and specify whether to shut down or restart the computer.
4. We can also specify the message for a remote user with a reason.
5. We can also do the above thing by typing the following cmd command.
shutdown /[r|s] /m \\ComputerName /c “Comment” /d [u|p] <xx>:<yy>
EXAMPLE:- shutdown /s /m \\honey-pc/t 30 /c “Shutting down for update.” /d P:1:1
- Where /s specifies the shut we can also replace /s with /r to restart the remote computer.
- /m specify the target computer.
- /t 30 specifies the time-out period before the system shuts down and it is optional.
- /c specify the comment that should be in double quotes.
- /d specify the reason for system restart or shutdown.
Shutdown PC From Linux OS
We can also shut down our computer from Linux OS. For this, we need a samba-common package installed on the Linux system. We can install it on the Ubuntu system with the following command.
We can open the terminal from the keyboard with the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+t.
“sudo apt-get install samba-common.”
After running this command type the following command from the terminal.
“net rpc shutdown -I IP.address -U user{e66e6f15cd857a101efbf20a7a941ba5467be7d37c5afcb20afd7fa48b899e63}password”
Replace the IP address with a numerical address and username and password with a remote computer username and password.
